Compumix II

1973 – 1977

The Compumix II was Quad Eight's automation system — an early attempt to give engineers repeatable, programmable mix recall on a desk otherwise operated entirely by hand. The system used voltage-controlled amplifiers to retain fader positions, letting the engineer print a mix pass and have the desk reproduce it. A 1974 Recording magazine spread featured Hollywood engineer Armin Steiner (one of the most credentialed engineers on the West Coast) endorsing the Compumix II, with copy claiming it was among the first commercially available programmable mixing systems. Competing automation systems from Allison Research, ADM, and others were emerging at roughly the same time, so the exact chronological claim is contested — but the Compumix II was real, available, and in use at top US studios by the mid-1970s.
