Spectra Sonics
Transformerless Clarity
Spectra Sonics, founded in Utah, built transformerless consoles with a distinctive clean sound that predated the SSL by nearly a decade. Their Model 1020/1024 series consoles appeared in Muscle Shoals, Ardent, and other serious American studios through the 1970s.
Their philosophy — that transformers added more coloration than they were worth — was controversial when it launched but foreshadowed the direction much of the industry would eventually take.
